Date: 19.01.2016

Since the end of 2008, Portugal has been running the Golden Visa program, which means that by investing money in real estate, business or securities in Portugal, you get the opportunity to become a citizen of Portugal, which in turn is a full member of the EU.

Over the three-plus years that the Golden Visa program has been in effect, Portugal's budget has been replenished by €1.6 billion, with more than €1.5 billion coming from real estate transactions.

According to statistics from The Portugal News Online, by the end of 2015, 2,788 residence permits for investment had been issued in Portugal, of which 2,635 (95%) were for real estate investments. In addition to real estate purchases, 149 permits were issued for the transfer of capital to Portugal and 4 for the creation of a business that provided more than 10 jobs for Portuguese citizens.

The main investors in 2015 who received residence permits in Portugal were residents of the People's Republic of China.
