Dubai simplifies rental conditions for owners
Owners of houses and apartments in the emirate will now be able to rent them out without obtaining prior permission from a confirmed operator. However, only the entire living space can be rented out; renting out rooms is prohibited.
Tenants will also be able to sublet their rental property to tourists for short periods, provided they obtain the relevant permission from the owner and meet all the requirements of the Dubai Tourism Department.
The innovation could bring hundreds of apartments to the rental market. This is very timely, since Dubai is planning to welcome 20 million tourists by 2020. But professional rental operators will have to go through a complex licensing system to operate. Such houses and apartments will have to meet quality, safety and health standards, and meet the necessary safety standards. Owner companies will have to ensure proper maintenance of such properties and provide all necessary services to guests. The Department of Tourism classifies all such properties as “standard” or “deluxe”.
