Spain received the highest number of Blue Flags in 2017

Date: 05.02.2018

This year, Spain has again received the highest number of Blue Flags for its beaches.

The Blue Flag is an internationally recognised award that defines a beach as clean, safe and based on strict criteria regarding water quality.

In 2017, Spain boasted 684 Blue Flags, more than any other country – the 30th year in a row it has topped the Blue Flags table. Spain values its reputation for having the best beaches in the world and has topped the Foundation for Environmental Education's league table since it first launched in 1987.

The province of Valencia received the most blue flags in Spain with 129, followed by Galicia with 133 and Catalonia with 95 – the same trend as in 2016.

Alicante and its award-winning beaches are a hotspot for holidaymakers and those looking to buy a holiday home in Spain. Punta Prima beach, south of Alicante, with its fine sandy beaches and clear waters, for example, was awarded a Blue Flag for 2017, and we have lots of new developments there that you can check out on our website.
