Spain overtakes US as world's second-largest tourist destination

Spain became the second place in the world in 2017, overtaking the United States of America, where tourists come the most. Spain is now behind only France … for now.

With 201 million tourists in 2017, Spain has cemented an impressive track record in the hospitality industry. From a Spanish perspective, tourism has grown by a staggering 60% since 2012. The British are in first place with over 18 million tourists. Germany is second with 11.4 million, and France is third with almost 7 million.

Year-round mild weather, beautiful unspoiled landscapes, excellent food, friendly locals, modern health and transport facilities, amenities and a rich cultural background make Spain a safe tourist destination.

For almost 30 years in a row, Spain has topped the world ranking of Blue Flags awarded by the independent Foundation for Environmental Education. 2017 was no exception, Spain once again convincingly showed the world ranking with more than 579 blue flags, surpassing its nearest competitor. Blue Flags are awarded only after meeting strict requirements and are an indicator of their high environmental and quality standards.

It is in this positive context that investors are flocking back to Spain, increasingly interested in potential buying and selling opportunities (Spain is currently experiencing a double-digit property boom). A growing property market coupled with a consolidated tourism industry are enticing investors to enter the market with a new sense of confidence.
