Phuket has long been a popular tourist destination, but in recent years, tourist arrivals to the region have only increased. Last year, 8.4 million visitors went to Phuket. This record amount was significantly increased from 2016. And the growth continues today.
Passenger traffic at Phuket International Airport jumped nearly 19 percent in the first quarter of this year, according to statistics. This was partly due to the opening of the airport's new international terminal. The airport can now seamlessly connect to Europe, China and the Middle East.
China remains a key market for Phuket with arrivals from the mainland, while arrivals from Australia and Europe have remained stable in recent years.
With more people visiting Phuket than ever before, hotel occupancy rates have also been on the rise. The Thailand Hotels Association (THA) noted that the island’s hotel occupancy rate rose to 75 percent in 2017, an increase of nearly 12 percent compared to 2016. The THA also found that Phuket has the best hotel sector in all of Thailand.
