The European Parliament voted for visa-free travel for Georgian citizens
The vote took place at the plenary session on February 2. This is the final vote on the Georgia issue , after which only technical procedures must be completed .
553 MEPs supported Georgia's visa liberalization during the vote , while 66 were against and 28 abstained . The voting process was preceded by debates between MEPs .
The European Parliament and the Council of Europe reached a political agreement on visa liberalisation for Georgia with the European Union ( EU ) in December 2016 .
On 20 December, the Council of the EU Committee of Permanent Representatives of the Governments of Member States to the EU ( Coreper ) approved amendments to the text of the visa liberalisation for Georgia .
Now that Georgia's visa liberalisation has been approved by the European Parliament , the amended provisions will be formally endorsed by the EU Council at ministerial level .
Minister of European and Euro – Atlantic Integration Viktor Dolidze believes that Georgians will be able to enjoy visa-free travel to the European Union at the end of March or the beginning of April .
Georgian Foreign Minister Mikheil Janelidze commented on the issue , saying that the EP's move underlines the EU 's strong support for Georgia .
