In Spain, people are increasingly buying new buildings rather than resale homes

Date: 20.11.2017

New home sales rose 18.8% in the third quarter of the year, compared with 15% for existing homes.

Second-hand homes are still the most purchased type of property in Spain, although new construction is starting to gain momentum thanks to the rapid development of the construction sector. Thus, sales of new homes increased by 18.8% in the third quarter of 2017 compared to the same period last year, exceeding the growth of used housing, which increased by 15%.

Here are some of the findings from the Property Registry statistics compiled by the Spanish Registrar's College, which show that between July and September, 119,156 purchases were registered in the property registers, an increase of 15.6% compared to the same period in 2016. This is the highest figure since 2011. In the last 12 months, 445,725 transactions were registered, the highest figure in the last six and a half years on an annual basis, with an annual increase of 13%.
