London to build tallest residential building in Western Europe

Date: 10.03.2016

Chinese developer Greenland Group has received official permission to build the tallest residential building in Western Europe. The twin skyscraper, 240.5 m high, will be erected in London's Canary Wharf. The concept of the 67-storey tower in the shape of a flower petal was developed by the architectural studio HOK. The new building will be called Tower Hamlets (translated from English as "Petal Towers"), according to the architectural bureau's website.

The skyscraper will house 861 apartments, with cafes and shops on the lower floors. The total area of commercial real estate in Tower Hamlets will be 941 sq. m, the entire facility will occupy an area of 0.56 hectares.

The HOK project envisages the development of 3.75 thousand square meters of public spaces and a children's area with a playroom and a drawing room with a total area of 900 square meters. All Tower Hamlets' domestic services will be located in an adjoining building, connected to the skyscraper by a closed winter garden with glass walls. A terrace with green plantings is planned to be built on the roof of the "Petal Towers".

Tower Hamlets will become one of the architectural dominants of the London landscape.

Currently, the tallest residential building in Western Europe is the 47-story Intempo skyscraper in the Spanish city of Benidorm on the Mediterranean coast. The height of the Intempo twin towers is 189 m, Tower Hamlets will surpass this object by 51.5 m. The tallest residential building in Eastern Europe is considered to be the Moscow skyscraper Triumph Palace with a height of 264.1 m. In the combined rating of tall buildings in Europe, the leader is the Federation Tower, which is located in the Moscow City complex. The height of this object reaches 374 m, however, a significant part of the skyscraper is occupied by offices, cafes and retail space, so the Federation is not considered a residential building.
