Festivals in Alicante, Spain

Date: 19.01.2018

If there’s one thing Spain knows how to do well, it’s throwing festivals. Alicante’s party calendar includes a number of very different, yet exciting, festivals. Alicante becomes a pyrotechnic wonderland during Las Jogueras, a medieval battlefield during the Moors and Christians festival, and an atmospheric stage for a host of arts festivals.

Reyes Magos (Three Wise Men) January 5-6 On January 5, Spaniards in cities across Spain celebrate the arrival of the religious monarchs with a colorful parade called the Cabalgata de los Reyes Magos. During this parade, Melchor, Gaspar, and Baltasar parade through the streets on floats from which they throw sweets.

Carnival (Carnival) February-March Costumes, street parties, music, masked balloons and a huge parade on Rambla de Méndez Núñez last for almost two weeks. The last day is truly unique as El Barrio fills with people donning masks and fancy dresses for the Velatorium and the Entierro de la Sardina (Burial and Burial in Sardina).

Semana Santa (Holy Week) March-April Although not as famous as Seville, Holy Week in Alicante is a wonderful time to visit the charming port city. While 20,000 people take to the streets, Holy Wednesday is perhaps the most beautiful, as the entire procession takes place through the winding streets of Alicante's Santa Cruz district. Maundy Thursday sees Spain's largest paso (decorated cloak with sculptures depicting scenes of Christ's passion) of the Last Supper.

Virgen del Carmen July 16 It’s no surprise that a city that sits on the coast pays homage to the patron saint of sailors! Fishermen and sailors in Alicante carefully decorate their boats, but the best place to see the festivities is on the nearby island of Tabarca, where the image of the Virgin sits majestically in her own boat in a sailor’s parade!

Nochebuena / Navidad (Christmas / Christmas) December 24-25. As Christmas approaches, the streets of Alicante twinkle with lights and Christmas markets bring the large squares to life. Entire families gather for the biggest meal of the year. The typical sweet finale is torrón, a sweet toasted almond nougat.
